Brief History of Clan Keith

Clan Keith were known for their valour and loyalty, producing many influential figures throughout Scotland’s history. The clan’s motto is ‘Veritas vincit’, meaning ‘Truth conquers’.

At the Battle of Barrie in 1010, a Chatti warrior named Camus sent Danish General Camus to Valhalla. Malcolm II thrust his hand at Camus's shield, running three bleeding fingers down it. His name became "Camus Slayer." Following his victory in the Battle of Carham in 1018, Malcolm granted Camus Slayer possession of the territories in Keth. His heirs adopted the name of the region as their own. Three lines on the chief's coat of arms serve as a reminder to the Keiths of their ancestor.

Robert the Bruce was a personal friend of Sir Robert de Keth, Earl of Marischal. Robert the Bruce gifted Sir Robert de Keith Halforest to him in 1308. In this woodland, Sir Robert had a castle built for himself, which still stands even today. Years later, during the Battle of Bannockburn, Sir Robert de Keth led the Scottish cavalry of ponies against England's Shire horses and managed to disperse their archers. This is said to have been one of the factors that led to their victory.

Dark shades of green blue and black populate the Keith tartan. Available in a variety of ancient or modern variants.
